CANDY - V View Reviews #33
A beautiful, picturesque scenic town with dense forest and fog is a perfect setting for a crime thriller cum murder mystery Candy. The plot begins with the murder of Mehul Awasthi(Mihir Ahuja) a student of Rudra Valley School in the fictional town of Rudrakund in Uttarakhand. His body is nailed to a big tree in a dark dense forest and his best friend Kalki Rawat(Riddi Kumar) goes missing. Jayant Parekh (Ronit Roy) their mentor is shocked and goes in search to find the murderer. In the process, he exposes the drug racket which is run by Vayu Ranaut(Nukul Roshan Sachdev) son of the corrupt politician Money Ranaut( Manu Rishi Chaddha). Ratna Sankhwar( Richa Chadda), the DSP of Rudrakund town is in charge of the case. But the villagers whisper that Masaan, a supernatural figure is behind the chaos but no one knows whether he is a human or a demon. Is Jayant right in suspecting Vayu as Massan or is it a figment of their imagination as a result of Candy's effect on the brain or is it supernatural being the audience need to judge in the process of watching?
Candy is not just about a crime or a murder but beautiful and emotional tales are woven with subplots. It is a good mix of drama mystery intrigue with impressive and surprising twists and turns. It's a cocktail of subplots, flashbacks and complicated characters. It touches the society's issues of drugs, sexual assault, bullying by seniors, corrupt politicians, their ambitions etc. With a good amount of fear, hope and suspense it is worth watching.
The performance of the actors is equally good. Ronit Roy in the role of a tough guy and emotional person maintain the balance well through acting. Richa Chadda delivers a fine performance as a police officer struggling to balance her professional and personal life. As Vayu, Nakul Roshan Sachdev delivers a good performance and stand out. Manu Rishi Chadda has an interesting character of a politician and father that he portrays well. Anju Alva Naik is convincing. Riddi Kumar with her natural acting abilities gives a brilliant performance as Kalki. Gopal Datt and Vijayant Kohli fit in an impressive performance as Headmaster Thomas and Father Marcus.
The cinematography, editing and background music are all apt. The series is split into 8 episodes with hints of another possible season. Though there is nothing new in the storyline but the audience who love thrillers can watch it on Voot.
