TABBAR - V View Reviews #39

Tabbar means family in Punjabi. Here it is a story of the Singh family and their strong bond with each other. An unfortunate incident and its consequences change the dynamic of the family. Set in  Deepnagar in Jalandhar, Punjab, Omkar Singh (Pavan Malhotra) lives with his wife and their two sons. Elder son Harpreet aka Happy (Gagan Arora)is a dutiful son and takes coaching in Delhi to be an IPS officer. The younger son, Tegi (Sahil Mehta) is a college student who aspires to be a social influencer. Things turn upside down when Happy shoots a local politician's younger brother Maheep Sodhi. Omkar Singh defies all odd to save his family in the overall plot.
This simple plot with layered characters become strong and impactful due to its storytelling technique. This keeps the audience glued to the screen throughout the eight episodes on Sony Liv. The characters do not talk too much but convey the emotions through their expression, body language and eyes. It's the consistent performance of the entire cast that makes the series simply superb. Pawan Malhotra is commendable as Omkar Singh. He is intense and exceptionally good. Supriya Pathak as Sargun is engrossing and impressive. She is the cement of the family. Paramvir Singh Cheema stands tall over other characters as a police officer Lucky. He is one of the most likeable characters. Ranvir Singh Shorey is excellent as local politician Ajeet Singh Sodhi. On one hand, he is merciless and on other hand he is compassionate. He shines in his brief role. Gagan Arora is promising and convincing. So is Sahil Mehta. Kanwaljeet Singh, Ali Mughal and Nupur Nagpal are commendable.
Though the plotline appears a grim tale it highlights the heavy use and abuse of drugs and its association with youngsters, rich and powerful. Appears very relevant these days when it is on national news..therefore very relatable and to some extent, it's very near to 'Udta Punjab' vibes.
Each episode of this series begins with Quote by Baba Farid, a Sufi saint and this makes the presentation intense and soul touching.
The music is another highlight and strikes the perfect chord and connects with the audience instantly. The music and the background soundtrack is composed by Sneha Khanwalker. The use of Hindi Punjabi language, the authentic locations, the dialogues, the cinematography, the screenplay, the visual appeal all blend beautifully and enhance the overall impact. There is less focus on police interrogation but it can be overlooked to enjoy the series. At times this series reminds the audience of the popular movie Drishayam.
Tabbar is an intense family drama with a realistic depiction of the middle-class Punjabi family, so it's true to its title delivering an edge of the seat thriller. It outshines everyone on Sony Liv and is a masterpiece directed by Ajit Pal Singh.
