RANJISH HI SAHI - V View Reviews #48

There is nothing new in the plotline of Ranjish Hi Sahi. Many Bollywood movie revolves around this type of extramarital love, separation, longing, guilt kind of masala. The hero Shankar (Tahir Raj Bhasin) after delivering 3 flop film in succession intend to meet Amna Parvez(Amala Paul) pure professional. Amna is in emotional turmoil after a ruined friendship with Zubair. She is attracted to Shankar, who is already married and follows next is the story for the next 8 episodes of the show.
It is a fictional version of Mahesh Bhatt's life and his relationship with the late actor of Hindi Bollywood in the 70s, Parvin Bobi. The whole setting is in the 70s. Those who are aware of Bollywood of that time can easily guess the other characters, whose name is changed for the reel sake. Mahesh Bhatt becomes Shanker Vats, similarly, Mukesh becomes Ganesh and so on...
The lead cast is Tahir Raj Bhasin, Amala Paul, Amrita Puri and Zarina Wahab. They have done justice to their characters. Tahir Bhasin as a father, husband, son, lover expressed himself beautifully. His inner conflict, his conscience is obvious when he is not delivering dialogue. Similarly, Amala Paul as a Schizophrenic actor was strong. Her big eyes added intensity to the character she played. Amrita Puri too had a strong role and it was worth watching her. Zarina Wahab, the veteran actress made her presence felt with the complex role on screen. Paras Priyadarshan and Rukhsar as the younger brother Ganesh too had a lot of screen space. Music was apt according to the storyline but Bollywood has already exploited it ample of times, so the curiosity was missing. The presentation too was not gripping. The constant switch from flashback to present and vice a verse was confusing at times. Maybe the maker assumes that the audience knows it all.
The writer and director Pushpa Bhardwaj's ode to Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi is streaming on VOOT.
