THE GREAT INDIAN MURDER - V View Reviews #56
Since the name of Ajay Devgan was associated with this series, I was too curious to watch, secondly, the promos were very appealing and finally, Prateek Gandhi, who played the role of Harshad Mehta excellently in the series "Scam 1992 Harshad Mehta Story' was also one of the reasons for my eagerness to watch this series but great names always do not make the show great.
The Great Indian Murder is based on Vikas Swaroop's novel 'Six Suspects'. The series could have been named the same.
Vikrant Rai aka Vicky was an industrialist and a politician's son with a casanova lifestyle and made many enemies due to his nature. He was celebrating his acquittal in the rape and murder of two young girls at a farmhouse in Chattarpur. In the midst of the celebration, he is shot dead. There are six suspects.
Mohan Kumar ( Raghubir Yadav) is a retired bureaucrat,
Andamanese boy Eketi( Mani PR) is in search of a statue of his tribe God Ingitai,
Bollywood star Shabnam Saxena ( Paoli Dam),
Ritu( Reecha Inamdar) is the stepsister of Vicky,
Ashok Rajput ( Sharib Hashmi) is a welfare officer from Rajasthan,
Jagan Nath Rai( Ashutosh Rana) is the home minister of Chattisgarh and also the father of Vicky. These above six suspects have their motive to kill Vicky. But, who killed him.... the cop Suraj ( Pratik Gandhi) from CBI and Sudha ( Richa Chadda) from Delhi police need to investigate. The process that follows for the nine-episode is the plot of the series.
Too many subplots are weaved in the process as the story progress. All six suspects have their backstories, but the best is Munna and Eketi's track. Munna wants a better life for his sister and Eketi's search for Ingitai''takes him from Andaman to Kolkata to Chennai to Jharkhand and finally to Delhi. The subplot includes the role of media, anonymous vlogging, ultra-left organisations, casteism, the unprivileged, spoiled elite, nexus between corrupt politicians, greedy businessmen and criminals, framing of innocents for political gain etc. Too many subplots, the slow pace and constant juggling of past and present are its drawback.
The performance of the actors is decent. The star of the show is Mani PR as Eketi. So is Shashank Arora as Munna, a small-time thief. Raghubir Yadav is hilarious with his split personality. Sharib Hashmi, Paoli Dam, Jatin Goswami, Amey Wagh have done justice to their character.
Cinematography by Rishi Punjabi is realistic and music by Raghu Dixit and Ketan Sodha adds to the drama. Direction, Screenplay, Visual appeal are good enough.
Overall under the direction of Tigmanshu Dhulia, this series is a little more than average as a suspense drama. It is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
