CODE M - V View Reviews #73
Code M is a patriotic, crime, suspense thriller that is streaming on Voot. There are two seasons of this series. Season one revolves around an Indian Army Lawyer Monica Mehra(Jennifer Winget) who discovers a conspiracy plot during her investigation of the military encounter case. Season two picks right where it left off, with new conflict. Here review is on season two. The characters are the same but the location did shift from Rajasthan to Mumbai and Pune. In this season Major Monica Mehra has been promoted.. She is given the duty to provide security for the Chief Minister at the Kargil day celebration. Despite all the safety measures, an attempt is made to kill the Chief Minister. She investigates the attempted assassination and strongly feels that the men behind the mission are an insider. The cat and mouse chase begins and it is fast-paced and engaging with multiple twists. How Monica Mehra uncovers the dark truth is the basic plot.
Along with the main plot Monica's past, especially the mysterious death of her father, haunted her, and her failed marriage consumed the majority of the screen time.
The series raises the voice against corruption at different levels. It also exposes the conflicts between Army men and the police.
Code M in the military language means Court Martial and the plot doesn't seem to be an apt title for the show. The series also failed to connect with the audience due to the weak and rushed execution and predictability. Though season one was a huge success, season two failed to leave a mark.
The storyline and the performance of the lead and the supporting characters play a major role to make the entire show binge-worthy. Jennifer Winget is impressive and shines. It is majorly her show and the spectacular role that she carries amazingly makes it more watchable. Tanuj Virwani as Angad Sandhu is captivating and has a substantial role. He is clean, sharp and reliable within the limitations. The chemistry between the two is also good. Atul Kumar as Vikram Mehra and Swanand Kirkire as Ismail Qureshi are a new addition and the interesting ones. Eklavya Kashyap as Monica's right hand Rahil Khan is also good.
The cinematography by Jay Bhanushali is sophisticated and alright. The editing is ok but gives a rushed vibe. The background score though loud and common flows with the narrative and makes the scene lively. The script could have been better.
The investigation led by a woman army officer, a fierce lady in uniform is unconventional, impressive and a fresh change. Climax and action are crispy and pacy. 'Army, over family' is the soul of this show.
Directed by Akshay Chaubey and created by Ektaa R Kapoor, this series with eight-episode is a one-time watch.
