MODERN LOVE MUMBAI( SEASON 1) - V View Reviews #75
As the name suggests, set in Mumbai, this series 'Modern Love Mumbai' is inspired by personal essays from 'The New York Times ' column 'Modern Love'. This soulful anthology is a set of 6 stories with 6 episodes, all of which blend into one in the final episode. Love is the biggest saleable emotion, here it explores its many forms in the city of dreams Mumbai, the heart of India's financial and entertainment capital and poly cultural city. Unique, uplifting yet universal tales are told with tenderness and capture the pulse of the city. It is more than retelling as it explores love in all its shades and emotions, romantic, platonic, parental, marital, and self-love weaved with humour and melancholy with ease.
Shonali Bose' 'Raat ki Raani'
This story is about a young Kashmiri girl Lali ( Fatima Sana Sheikh) who is a cook by profession. Her husband Lufti abandoned her after getting 'bored'. This story is about her survival and coping with the loss of love. She crosses two flyovers, one literal one and one metaphorical one. Sealink is the metaphor for sadness and Shahrukh khan's bungalow is the euphemism for success. Lali is the symbol of strength and empowerment, brilliantly performed by Fatima.
Hansal Mehta's 'Baai'
This story is a sensitive portrayal of the LGBTQ community and gay romance. It is a tribute to love over hatred. The three lead actors in this story are Tanuja(Baai), Pratik Gandhi(Maanzar) and Ranveer Brar(Rajveer)who infused life into a simple tale. This episode on gay romance is not available on Amazon Prime Video in UAE.
Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Mumbai Dragon'
This story raises global societal issues with Indian sensibilities. Set within the Indian-Chinese community it is a struggle within the relationship, how to maintain a balance between letting go and holding on or else it becomes suffocating. It also highlights the complex identities and life of immigrants. Meiyang Chang and Yeo YanYan are in key roles.
Alankrita Shrivastav's 'My Beautiful Wrinkles'
This story is about hypocrisies residing in most of us. Razvi( Danish)who is in his twenties confesses his attraction to women in her sixties to Dibar Sodhi( Sarika). Their state of mind is beautifully captured here. It is pleasing to see their good chemistry.
Dhruv Sehgal's 'I Love Thane'
This is the most modern story in this set of anthologies. Masaba Gupta meets a man (Ritwik) who isn't on Instagram and with whom she walks alongside in the part of the town he loves. Emotions and emojis are nicely interweaved. The actors were very natural and effortless which made this story so feelable.
Nupur Asthana's 'Cutting Chai'
It is a story of Latika( Chitrangda Singh) who dreams of being a novelist but after her marriage to Daniel(Arshad Warsi), her life is gripped with monotony and household chores, a story very relatable for the homemakers.
The story of you and me is brilliantly shot and laced with a heartfelt performance by the actors. The soulful music, the good screenplay and good direction make this story binge-worthy. In the set of six different human stories, six directors, six protagonists, and six episodes, one constraint element was Mumbai. Stories defy all norms of age, race, and gender. The human connection, empathy, acceptance, and embrace that Mumbai offers is a visual treat on Amazon Prime Video.
