SHE (SEASON2) - V View Reviews #77
Imitiaz Ali's 'She' is one more crime thriller streaming on OTT. It is a story of an undercover agent on a mission to infiltrate gangs of a dreaded and mysterious drug lord 'Nayak'. The show has two seasons. The first season was about a transformation of a simple constable into an undercover agent. Her motive was to expose the massive drug racket in India. By the end of the show, she makes a deal with the kingpin(Nayak) for her survival and promises to be at his service. Season 2 takes off from where it left us in season 1. The undercover agent starts leading a dual life with no chance to return. The antagonist is introduced with a backstory and exposes the darkness more. The undercover agent on a mission is Constable Bhumika Pardesi aka Bhumi(Aaditi Pohankar) who gets into the character's skin with total conviction. It is she who is running the show. She is constantly juggling between her two worlds. She needs to manage and balance between her life and duty. She had experienced many lows in her life, including poverty, hardship, and an abusive husband. Her character transforms, she fools her superiors in the police, confronts her ex-husband bravely and evolves into a confident woman who runs a drug network. She is unapologetic, she is erotic and gets intimate with many men. The new season is more explicit than before.
Nayak, a man of myth, an expert throat slitter, and a ruthless drug kingpin whom nobody has seen outside his world is perfectly played by Kishore Kumar G. His expressionless approach and the chemistry with the protagonist elevates the show.
The most interesting part of the series is figuring out where Bhumi's loyalties lie. It keeps the audience engaged. The performance of these two characters is the highlight of the show. Aaditi Pohanker successfully brings forth Bhumi's dilemma, her pain, her ambition, and her complex emotion. Her dialogue delivery and her mannerism are apt according to the character she played. The rest of the characters are pretty decent. Vishwas Kini as Jason Fernandez, Sam Mohan, Suhita Thatte, Saquib Ayub, Sandeep Dhabale, Shivani Rangole, Rohit Kokate, Mohammed Ali Beg, Resh Lamba and ensemble. The second season directed by Arif Ali is fast-paced and more thrilling than the first season. The technical and creative aspects of the 'She'(2) are good. The camera work is praiseworthy and the editing is efficient. Music flows with the theme. But the best is its casting.
There are too many drawbacks too. It is overcomplicated, explicit sexual content, liberal use of expletives, repetitive, unnecessary subplots, and unnecessary leaps, farfetched plot, and the regressive concept of treating women like an object. The writing and setting are not up to the mark. This is not a family show.
This series with 7 episodes is streaming on Netflix.
