KARM YUDH - V View Reviews #88

Karm Yudh is a story of dirt in the corporate elite class family. Set in Kolkata, there is a war of succession in Kolkata's wealthy Roy family. The plot starts with a fire accident in Roys group of industries where 40 employees are dead. The investigation uncovers layers and layers of lies, deceit, and backstabbing. The bitter relationship in the family is exposed in public. The narrative revolves around Indrani Roy(Paoli Dam)who is hell-bent to be the head of the industry after her husband Vardhan Roy( Rajesh Khattar)is paralyzed. The other two in the war of succession are Bhishan Roy ( Satish Kaushik), Vardhan's elder brother, and Guru Shahtri( Ashutosh Rana), who is their illegitimate brother. There are lots of twists and turns, sentiments and tension, and backdrop accounts while narrating the storyline. All the elders are busy with the politics of succession while the younger one is busy with the drama of Romance. Indrani's stepson Abhimanyu( Ankit Bisht) is a spoilt brat who molests a girl and eventually falls in love with her. Along with these two main plots, many subplots are cooked together. There is a Naxalite angle, media trail, corrupt journalism, power dynamics, tangled relationships, and a  story of revenge. With this complex premise, the story moves on. Who will take over the Roys? What will be the new dynamics in this family? what will be the result of police investigations are all to be seen in the coming 8 episodes.
The presentation of the story is superficial and unconvincing. All the threads of subplots are tangled. It focuses on too many issues unnecessarily. However, the stellar ensemble saves the show from drowning. Paoli Dam as Indrani Roy is a star. She is effortless and believable. Satish Kaushik as Bhishan Roy plays his role with ease but actor like him is underutilized. Similarly, another fine actor underutilized is Ashutosh Rana as Guru Shahtri. Vardhaan Roy by Rajesh Khatter is good. Abhimanyu Roy by Ankit Bisht is cute. Pranay Pachauri as Samar is efficient. Chandan Roy Sanyal as a dubious newsman is convincing. Anjana Sukhani as an investigative officer is a good fit. Satyajit Sharma as a loyalist is compelling. Tara Alisha Berry, Akash Dhar, Malkhan Singh, Nitin Hirani, Saundarya Sharma, Shruti Chauhan, and Aashit Chatterjee in the supporting cast is noteworthy. Performance is only the brightest spot of this series. Technical side like camera work, editing background score, etc are just ok.
Produced by the Adhikari Brothers and directed by Ravi Adhikari,  Karm Yudh is streaming on Disney + Hotstar.
