TANAAV - V View Reviews #94
Tanaav is a gripping espionage thriller, set in Kashmir in 2017. It is adapted from a well-known Israeli series FAUDA. Fauda's literal meaning is 'chaos' and is centered around the Israel-Palestine conflict. Tanaav centers around the Kashmir issue. The crux of the plot is the conflict between STG(Special Task Group)and the insurgents in Valley. The director took great care by not taking a stand for STG(Special Task Group) or glorifying the insurgents. Both parties are devoted to their goal. Umar Raiz aka Panther is on his mission for "Freedom of Kashmir" and STG to keep terrorism under control in Valley. In a nail-biting Cat and Mouse chase who succeed is the basic plotline. It is presented with intriguing twists. Every episode ends on a cliffhanger compelling the audience a break-free binge-watching. Then it is knitted with a variety of emotions like love, betrayal, devotion, vengeance, etc. Those who have not seen the original version of Fauda on Netflix will enjoy it more as some scenes in Tannav are the exact copy and the audience will find it repetitive.
Kabir Farooqui(Maanav Vij) lives a peaceful family life after retiring from STG. He is called on duty by Counter Insurgency Officers after it was discovered that the dreaded militant Umar Raiz ( Sumit Kaul) aka Panther who was killed by Kabir is actually alive and planning some big action in the valley. Kabir joins the team to nail Umar Raiz. His plan to nab was unsuccessful and Umar manages to escape. What happens next is to be seen.
The whole series is well-written with relatable characters. Manav Vij as Kabir the protagonist is earnest and believable. Sumit Kaul as Umar Raiz as the antagonist is convincing. His role is not like a typical Bollywood merciless terrorist. He is a family man and has his set of beliefs and ideologies. Shashank Arora as Junaid, the associate and the right hand of Umar Raiz is the real star as far as the performance is concerned. He justified his complex role with his powerful and impactful performance. Rajat Kapoor as Mallik the Chief Indian Intelligence manages to capture the essence of his role. His calm demeanor, whether it is persuasion, negotiation, or interrogation is at its best. Arbaz Khan as STG head Vikrant has limited screen space and he is ok. Strong and crucial roles are given to the female character as well. Waluscha De Sauza as Zainab is a terrorist's wife. Ekta Kaul as Dr. Farah is the love interest of Kabir and Junaid. Sukhmani Sadana as the wife Kabir. Zarina Wahab is the mother of Umar. All these characters depict the right intention and are believable. Other than these the ensemble of the cast is Danish Hussain, Satyadeep Mishra, Sahiba Bali, Amit Gaur, Arshan Goni, Rocky Raina, M K Raina, Sheen Dass, Aryaman Seth, and Mir Sarwar among others.
Cinematography is at its best. Beautiful Kashmir is captured very impactfully. Close-up shots reveal the mental status of the character. Dialogue and costume do touch the local flavor giving the audience the feel of Kashmir. Editing is crisp. Music floats with the theme. Viewers are kept engaged throughout. Overall it is a well-written and well-presented piece of work. Directed by Sudhir Mishra and Sachin Krishn, Tanaav is streaming with 12 parts on Sony LIV.
